Monsoon Skin Care

After the scorching summer heat, monsoon is approaching with drizzles and sprinkling raindrops. At some parts, it rains like cats and dogs and at others, it is prolonged dry spells with intermittent showers. The rains are always welcome as it provides succour from the oppressive heat and much-needed water for the lakes, water bodies and for the crops. Although we cannot ignore the intoxicating fragrance of moist soil, lush greenery and cool breeze, there are certainly some cons of the monsoon as well. We need to take care of our health. The skin requires special attention in this weather. The damp skin is to microbes and fungi what perhaps is candy to a child. Due to the dampness various rashes, itching, redness and ringworm proliferate. It is always better to adapt to and change one’s skincare regime according to various cleaning regimes. The basic rule is to keep one’s skin clean, acne-free, using a cleanser, toner, and moisturiser to get a radiant skin.

Here are a few tips which one can ply with our day to day life to keep one’s skin glowing and gorgeous skin.

1. Exfoliating in monsoon. (i.e. sloughing off the dead skin cells)

Monsoon is the time our skin requires pampering. Therefore, once a week, exfoliation if required so that the dead cells are removed and the growth of new skin cells is facilitated. This gives a glowing and soft look to the skin. Some of the homemade exfoliants are tea bags, sugar, yoghurt, oatmeal, papaya and baking soda.

2. Cleaning in Monsoon. Cleaning is an important part by which our skin can breathe at least cleanse your skin to remove dirt and oil that clog the pores. We can get rid of the debris on the upper layer and control oil production. Some of the products that can be used for cleansing are coconut oil, tea tree oil, aloe Vera, honey, lemon, rose water, apple cider and vinegar.

3. Toning in monsoon. It helps to remove excess dirt, makeup and external agents. It maintains the pH balance of the skin and helps in protecting against bacterial infections. It controls acne and also helps to close open pores. Homemade toners are best as compared to the commercially available ones. There are several varieties, like, green tea toner, lemon juice toner, rose water toners, cucumber water toner, rice water toner etc. These can be made easily at home. 2 drops of lavender essential oil + 1 tsp tea tree oil + 10 spoons of water yields a toner for use in summer.

4. Moisturising in Monsoon

The skin needs to be moisturised regularly to keep it soft, smooth and hydrated. Some of the homemade moisturisers are cucumber, olive oil, honey, aloe Vera, shea butter, vitamin E capsules, papaya, almond oil and yoghurt. Use rosewater as a moisturiser. IT makes skin supple and hydrated, gives a soothing effect and stops itching.

Quick Tips

Make rose water from fresh roses at home. Spray some rose water on the face and leave it to dry on its own. It acts as a good moisturiser.

5. Use neem-based face wash. It is antibacterial and anti-inflammatory. It also prevents acne. The skin can breathe freely after its application. Don’t use this facewash more than two times a day. It may make the skin dry if it is used more frequently.

6. Use hot water to clean face as it cleanses bacteria on the skin surface and closes the open pores.

7. Pull out your umbrella. Wear easy-going breathy outfits with flipflops to cherish the charismatic rainy season.

8. Stay hydrated. Our skin requires about seven to eight glasses of water in a day. Even in the rainy season, it clears all impurities from the body so the more we drink water more beneficial it is.

9. Use SPF 15 proof sunscreen to protect your skin from UV rays. Even if it is not so hot or even cloudy, the sunscreen protects from harmful ultraviolet rays that may penetrate the cloud cover as well. Hence, a good sunscreen is always recommended.

10. Don’t get wet in the first rain. It contains impurities in it and may cause ill effects – an invitation to ill – health.

11. A simple homemade face mask can be made of besan (gram flour), honey and rose water. Make a paste and apply on the face for a smooth and radiant effect. Make your face peels and packs to use natural products. Rub fennel ice cubes daily to tighten skin, large pores, acne and remove pimples during monsoons.
